My take on this issue:  Excel was here and setting *de facto* standards
before people who decided abbreviations for genetic codes were on the scene
in a big way.  Lots of us have had to avoid acronyms that are ambiguous.
In addition, there are lots of records of inappropriate abbreviations, one
of which is: https://worldwideinterweb.com/20-worst-acronyms-ever/

I suppose Excel could come up with a setting that allows or disallows the
expansion of dates, but that is filled with problems, also.
