What the immune response to the coronavirus says about the prospects for a vaccinehttps://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02400-7
It's not all about antibodies. A vaccine is not about "sterilizing immunity". It also may not be about "herd immunity" as much as it will be about existing "cross-immunity" (from the common cold and other diseases, "remembered" by T-Cells) already found in many people. It may be about strengthening this existing biological phenomenon.
(Note from other reading I've done -- some people seem to have cross-immunity from one pandemic strain of flu to another, though coronaviri are an entirely different family of viri. People with flu cross-immunity almost never get severe symptoms, but can pass along the flu as super-spreaders.)
Fascinating reading, and very different from what most media outlets have been saying. (Both the ones which are being alarmist and the ones which have been in denial.)
Not very differrent from what WHO and Dr. Fauci have been saying all along.
The bad news is, this pandemic won't be over in 2021. Not even close.
The problem is: How do you test for cross-immunity? (Spoiler alert -- nobody knows, yet.)
