Since you said “wall phone” (duck comes down from above, hanging from a string):
We had a wall phone in our kitchen in the 1970s.  Sometimes, when I called home from work, our approximately 3-year-old daughter answered it, after climbing onto a footstool under the phone.  
We would talk for a minute or two, and then I’d ask to talk to Mom.  She’d cheerily announce, “You’re going upside down!,” and she’d let the handset dangle.  I would emit a high-pitched “AAAaaahh!” with a descending pitch, as though falling off a cliff, and could hear daughter giggle as she headed down the hallway.

I actually still had a wall mounted dial phone in my basement until  8 years ago and I think most of  the  grand kids who were tall enough were able to use it. Amazing how things change - I had a mother-in-law who predated the airplane and the female right to vote.
