Note that LCTG heard a talk by Prof. Seager on Dec. 9, 2020. She described the early results of what may be successful detection of phosphine on Venus. It was a good talk. She is well worth hearing on exoplanets and their possibilities.

As George didn’t send this to the group I thought that I should forward it on. Note that you have to sign up through the Lexington Library

Exoplanets and the Search for Habitable Worlds
Tuesday, April 6, 7:PM
For thousands of years people have wondered, “Are there planets like Earth?” “Are such planets common?” “Do any have signs of life?” Today astronomers are poised to answer these ancient questions, having recently found thousands of planets that orbit nearby Sun-like stars, called “exoplanets”. M.I.T. Professor Sara Seager, one of the world’s leading experts on this search for Earth-like planets, will share the latest advances in this revolutionary field.
As we must, this will be a virtual presentation by Cary Library. Make your reservation: it is listed on the Cary events calendar, April 6. Click the hand icon to enter your name and e-mail.

Professor Seager works on space missions for planetary discovery and exploration. She was the Deputy Science Director for the MIT-led NASA mission TESS, the PI for the on-orbit JPL/MIT CubeSat ASTERIA, and is a lead for Starshade Rendezvous Mission (a space-based mission concept under technology development for direct imaging discovery and characterization of Earth analogs). Currently she leads a mission concept study for the search for signs of life or life itself in the Venus atmosphere.
Among other accolades, Professor Seager is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a MacArthur Fellow.
