Dear Saturday Morning Physics Community Members,

Please join us as our Winter 2021 Saturday Morning Physics season kicks off
tomorrow!

*February 20, 10:30 A.M.*
*Weighing and Counting Giants in the Sky*
*Maria Elidaiana da Silva Pereira **– **Research Fellow *
*(U-M Physics)*“Live” remote lecture followed by “live” Q&A
*YouTube talk link:* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9h8l_Pl9xLQ

Galaxy Clusters are the largest astronomical objects in the Universe. These
cosmic giants are bound together by gravity and are formed by galaxies, hot
gas, and mysterious dark matter. By counting them and measuring their
masses, we can understand the content and evolution of the Universe. In
this talk, Dr. Elidaiana da Silva Pereira will present how we can use light
for weighing galaxy clusters. She will also show how the Dark Energy Survey
uses the data to measure the quantity of dark matter and properties of the
even more mysterious component, the dark energy.
