 Philip --
Some of us are not expert scientists and engineers, but people with an interest in computers and technology, as well as science and engineering topics.
I have nothing beyond a BS Chemistry from the 1980's with no relevant work experience, and a self-taught computer hobby, including Windows, Linux and a Chromebook. (I don't tinker with my Android phone.)
I have given presentations where I didn't have prior technical knowledge of the subject -- just enough interest to do some online research and pull together whatever I could find.
Then the experts in our group filled in many details I had not known about in Chat and during questions and discussions during and after the meetings.
Some of these meetings have been my favorite experiences with the LCTG. The interaction with leading (or retired leading) people in their fields is something I don't usually find in computer user groups. The only experience which for me has come even close is the Natick FOSS user group, a group of desktop/laptop Linux users.
Please consider joining us and subscribing to our meeting notices.
You don't have to present anything, but it's more fun if everyone gives presenting a try once in awhile at least.

Hello.  Thank you for your invitation to join LCTG.  The subject of the meeting that I attended, which was my first, was on the recent Mars landing, and I enjoyed it very much.  However, I have not sought to become a member of the group because I would have nothing to contribute: although I earned a Ph.D. in physics many years ago, I spent almost the entirety of my professional career as a lawyer in areas unrelated to science, and my interest in and knowledge of current scientific developments are casual rather than avid--only that of a layman. Consequently, I don't see that my membership would be of benefit to the group, but I do appreciate being asked.--Phil Radoff
