 But the telephone was invented in 1876. So those early FAX machines must have been using telegraph lines. Amazingly, this FAX precursor did in fact simulate a 2D image.  The Samurai could even have FAXed a Japanese print!

In fact, it was Alexander Baine in 1843 who invented the electric printing telegraph.
