Exactly. For me, it's not just about COVID.

After getting COVID recently, I also wear a mask religiously. It also helps prevent the flu and other nasty things…

Like Steve, I follow the science and medical advice from my PCP.

As of now, masks are still recommended in any indoors space in the company of people you don't normally share indoors spaces with. That said, I have gone to restaurants with groups since the pandemic began. But only rarely, not once a week.

At-home pre-meeting testing would also put me a bit more at ease. But I don't think everyone in our group is on board with requiring evidence of a negative test before coming to weekly meetings.

Maybe things will get better sorted out by May, but I am not hopeful of this.

Presenters/speakers and group members still have to make our own decisions based on what we think we are hearing/seeing. Right now, I am seeing at least four diseases being spread at indoor gatherings, only one of which is COVID, and two others of which are killing people. Flu is one of those two. RSV may be another. But in most of our age groups, we can add pneumonia. Then there's that "severe cold" -- no one knows what it is yet.

My other group activities mostly take place outdoors, where COVID exposure is no longer a concern.

If we lose some speakers because of ongoing disease prevention protocols that's unfortunate. But getting seriously ill would be for me more unfortunate. And knowing I had played a role in someone else's illness or death would be very unfortunate to me.

Larry,

With all due respect, I will go in person if and only if the situation regarding the exposure risk of COVID and the other viruses improves considerably.  That’s my rule.

But that’s 6 months from now.

As a rule we should all try to make live in-person presentations.

I have an international expert on Deep Hot Rock research presenting on 24 May and I would like to see at least 20 folks for that.

Dan Kleppner has spoken with Maia Weinstock who is a science writer and Associate Director at MIT News.  She is author of a recent biography of Millie Dresselhaus (1930-2017).  Its title Carbon Queen recognizes Millie's important work on carbon nanotubes.  Ms. Weinstock lives in Belmont and says she's willing to talk to us but wants to speak to a live audience.

Have any of us read her book?

Can we provide a big enough --- say 20 --- live audience so that LCTG is not embarrassed?  The current 5 to 7 live audience would be embarrassingly small.

Work on layers of graphene two and three sheets thick and rotated small angles with respect to each other has found superconductivity and other surprising electronic effects.  The studies of graphene are producing exciting discoveries.

Do we have a metallurgist in the group (or one with a contact) who could give us a talk on graphene?
