Great idea!

I eventually created an inbox rule throwing all of those science discussion emails directly in the trash.

I don't know if folks realized it at all but somebody attached a 5 MB file to one email someone attached a 10 MB file to another and people were passing around very large emails in large quantities all day and night.

I have no idea how to turn on a message size column option in Gmail in a browser however, in Thunderbird you can optionally turn on a size column and sort your inbox folder by size which is convenient for eliminating large email that you really don't need.
