Gentlepeople-

Following the excellent presentation by Franklin today, I decided to 
check out the quaternion formulation, if possible, because I had not 
known before that Maxwell presented his analysis of electrodynamics in 
that formulation. (Wikipedia has an excellent summary of quaternion 
notation {apparently established by Hamilton].) During my quest, I found 
the following relatively recent article

which discusses and elaborates on the formulation. In my opinion, the 
article contains interesting speculations (e.g., a scalar 
electromagnetic field which I don't know if Maxwell envisioned) together 
with its analysis.
