To prove that it's a bug in the operating system and not in the hardware,
boot from a live CD or USB stick into an alternate system (e.g. the native
rescue/diagnostic partition, if it exists, or an external
diagnostic/rescue/installer CD).  Once you rule out a hardware issue, you
can focus on remediating a bug or virus in the regular operating system.
