My Dad had a set of "test lenses" like the ones optometrists used to use. Unfortunately when he died we sold or gave the set away.
These sets can be bought on Amazon and other places for $178 (plastic rimmed) to $229 (metal rimmed) complete with a case. This includes the calibrated frame into which the lenses are inserted. (The frame is calibrated to allow rotation of the cylinder lenses, so as to determine the angle of an astigmatism correction.)
I wouldn't go cheap with the lens kits, unless you can find a retired optometrist or someone else who has a kit they no longer want or need. Lens quality is important in this kit, so lower price may mean lower quality lenses, which could defeat your purpose.

Gentlepeople,I’m thinking of getting a optometrist lens set so I can measure my vision and fine tune my eyeglass prescription. I’m thinking of the old type, where you wear a frame and the doc inserts different lenses, asking is A or B better, etc.
Any thoughts on what I’m thinking?Do you know of a lens set I could get for free or low price?Have you done or considered doing anything like this yourself?
