Peter, I'm assuming you mean the (non HP?) vendor of the ink cartridges may
have a solution. Yes, I think that's a good approach to take -- they may be
able to facilitate a return or exchange.

The firmware download for the 9010 appears to be very recent and includes
"Dynamic security" which blocks non HP cartridges, so the behavior George
mentions is expected if the cartridge in question was not an HP cartridge.

No additional fixes are listed in the firmware notes, so it appears this
update is solely to restrict 3rd party cartridge operation.

I've been using a laser printer for so long that I had almost forgotten
what was going on in the land of ink subscriptions, but this situation was
recently documented by an author at The Verge. HP is blocking third-party
