A few years ago, I moved our Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) to voip.ms
It's a low-cost VoIP provider in Canada with servers in the USA and
elsewhere.
It provides all the services people have mentioned: voicemail forwarded to
email, call routing, SMS, fax, support for use while traveling, etc.
However, you need to be comfortable with configuring low-level stuff, so it
is better if you know how to program or do IT unlike Ooma and Magicjack.
Voip.ms has useful online help and guides.
You can use it at least three ways:
- via the voip.ms website
- with a softphone (software VoIP on phones and computers)
- dedicated hardware VoIP-to-POTS bridge like the Grandstream GS-HT802 2
Port Analog Telephone Adapter VoIP Phone & Device I purchased on amazon.com
There is also a programming interface for those inclined to low-level
access.
Just FYI,
Shaun Keller
