 Yes, I've also read about the new Toyota battery technology. It doesn't address the issues surrounding lithium mining, but it does extend range and overall battery longevity. 
The issues surrounding lithium mining are about to hit the US directly, with the discovery of a large potential mining source along the Nevada-Oregon border:
