It turns out that if you use BitDefender and either OUTLOOK, 
Thunderbird, or Eudora, you were affect (by a recent update).  The 
(temporary) fix (which works almost all of the time) is to turn off 
"Encrypted web scan" which can be found under Protection>Online Threat 
Prevention.

Yea, incompatibilities and how security software works "too well".
