I thought the OWL would help somewhat to show who is talking, even if it’s OK if this is imperfect.  Also, that it would pick up sound better than just a laptop’s microphone, especially if the instructor (whom BOLLI calls a Study Group Leader) walks around a little.

I don't think you need an OWL. Sounds like what you are doing is pretty good.  You won't do any better with an OWL given what you want to do.  Unless you are trying to enhance the formation of the social part of the meeting, there is no need to make it more complex.
