hard drives removed from gear I'm recycling has been to take a drill
with a 1/4" (or so) bit and drill 3 or 4 holes (in an irregular pattern)
through the case and the stack of platters, and maybe one through the
PCB, too. No way that puppy's gonna spin up anymore!<br>

While I suppose it's technically <span style="font-style: italic;">possible</span>
to get <span style="font-style: italic;">some</span> data off an HDD
platter that can't be spun up and read normally, I doubt I'm a
sufficiently high value target to be worth the considerable effort and
resources required to do that.<span><br>

OLD laptops. One with Windows XP, the other Windows 7. I called both
Staples and Best Buy both of which will take them (and a lot of other
stuff) at no cost. However it does not include wiping the disk.
Staples offers that service @$29 each, and Best Buy @39 each. Neither
could explain to me what a full erase means (for all I know they may
open the case and use a hammer).</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span
