[Lex Computer & Tech Group/LCTG] FW: Should You Shut Down Your Computer Every Night?

About dinosaurs -- if we got someone who knows a lot and is interesting to watch and listen to, that might be a good place to explore. Something more general than How did they replace all those teeth? but not too broad a topic.
How would you like to have been a nigersuarus dentist?
Turning off a PC -- Actually, in Windows you need to restart the system every two weeks or less to get all your updates to install correctly. But you also need to keep the PC on for eight continuous hours at least that often to get all your updates to download in the first place.
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-windows-needs-at-least-8-hours-online-to-update-reliably/?mc_cid=3fa1775c5b&mc_eid=fc278575d8
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-update-needs-eight-hours?mc_cid=3fa1775c5b&mc_eid=fc278575d8
So, shutting the PC down every night may actually prevent proper updating of Windows.
I usually shut down my PC when running Windows as often as I shut it down when using Linux -- I use the Pc on the average for four to twelve hours at a time. ( I do step away, but the PC remains on.) Then I shut it down at the end of my daily use. When scanning for malware, the PC stays on but not always connected to the Internet, for several overnights. Then I shut it down. I scan monthly for both Widn9ows and Linux.
So I think I leave the PC on under Windows enough to maintain the proper "connectivity".
For Linux, it doesn't make much difference, and there I have a similar usage pattern. When I'm done using the PC, I turn it off.
So count me as one who shuts the PC down every night, on the average.
As for which user type are you -- They missed a group -- LINUX USERS!! (OK, we are rather rare birds.)
(And Chromebook users, and people who only use their phones or iPads.) (Maybe someday there will be a significant group who only use their TV sets or home IoT hubs. Or their cars.)

There are a lot of different opinions out there. I do it every few days and shut off my screen when not using it because it generates a surprising amount of heat

Hi Everyone,
I missed the email about whether one should shut down their computer every night. What is the correct answer?
Regards, Lori Parkinson

I get material from HowStuffWorks.com every few days and it is fascinating. Read the first article on the nigersaurus and check out not only the number of teeth but the frequency with which they are replaced. The other articles from today’s mailing are also very interesting. We should have a talk on dinosaurs

Happy Tuesday
One paleontologist called it the weirdest dinosaur he'd ever seen. With hundreds of teeth and a face like a vacuum, what's not to love about the nigersaurus? Make its acquaintance in our article.
