Another example (and more) was the Mississippi River, before the Army Corps of Engineers ‘improved’ it. 
For an enjoyable look, read Mark Twain’s Life on the Mississippi.  Twain was a steamboat hand and, later, captain on the Mississippi.

On Google maps check out the Red River (of the north) from Fargo ND to Winnipeg Canada.  It goes on for ~250 miles with an average loop with a characteristic size of 1 mile. The 250 is how the crow flies, but maybe 750as the canoe paddles.  The surrounding farmland is very flat with the river dropping only 1 ft per mile.
