Your Facebook News Feed is the default view when you log in. It's just the main panel of running items, curated by the Facebook Algorithm. The notification you initially got when you logged in was where you were supposed to click Next to continue to set up the Facebook Protect feature.

It's Facebook's version of two-factor authentication (2FA). It was optional, but some hackers got into the accounts or government officials, so Facebook started requiring it in high-profile accounts. Now they're expanding it to all user accounts.
Google did something very similar recently with GMail. As of the end of May, 2022, email clients and certain other apps will no longer be able to gain access to gmail accounts using only a user name and a password. I have to turn on my phone now to confirm that it's really me logging into gmail if I access the account from anywhere except my Android Phone, which is always logged into Google if it's on. (The phone has a PIN and it stores the Google password, so that's 2FA according to Google.) Other Google services likely will follow, until no one will be able to access anything in Google except You Tube, Search and Maps (and maybe a few other general services) without using 2FA.
Yahoo did something similar awhile ago, requiring app passwords for apps which used to log in with the user name and password only. So far this does not extend to Yahoo Web Mail in Windows or Linux. But it soon will be like that everywhere. Microsoft Accounts may go this route soon as well. My paid Fastmail service has been like this for a couple of years at least.
In light of potential Russian hacking affecting US and EU users, expect to see a lot more sites and services making 2FA mandatory. Many banks already do this. So, don't lose your phone, unless you want to go through a difficult and unreliable Account Recovery process! For each of your accounts and services!!
This might be a good time to update group members about 2 Factor Authentication, password managers, etc. Not my specialty, but Peter Albin has done updates about this topic in the past.
As 2FA becomes more widespread, phone theft (or loss) is beginning to look as serious as identity theft. Being able to remotely or automatically lock and erase a lost or stolen phone is becoming a more and more attractive option.

I got a note from Facebook telling me to turn on Facebook Protect.
I looked it up and it appears to be a legitimate thing to go.
I googled to find instructions and it says “look for a notification on your News Feed” followed by some other stuff
I could find something called “News” but nothing called News Feed. And News seems to be links to lots of stories
A second statement says “on the welcome screen tap Next”. Can’t find it
Any suggestions
