SOH CAH TOA is still taught, though (thankfully) without any suggested 
ethnicity. It's one of the few math mnemonics that I don't consider 
harmful, because it's not a mnemonic substitute for actual reasoning. 
The names of the trig functions are mere accidents of history. PEMDAS is 
another example. Compare that with the execrable FOIL, which is a 
substitute for reasoning about the distributive property, which 
frequently causes students to draw mental arrows where they don't belong.
