Alice,

 

I have the necessary adapters to be able to try to mount the drive and determine if the files are still readable.  

If so, copying them would be trivial.

 

If the drive is no longer mountable, it might still be possible with sophisticated file recovery software to recover some or all the files.

I do NOT presently have that capability.

 

Given that the drive is 20 to 30 years old, it might or might not still be readable.

You probably want to tell people the model number.  Lenovo bought IBM s business in 2005, so I am guessing it was a Thinkpad of some type?
