I think both are right:

   - Writing something down leaves a more lasting impression in your memory
   - Using a digital program to record ideas uses less paper.

The question becomes why is it so difficult to  adopt to handwriting on a
digital tablet to record our notes?  If we could do this, we'd have the
best of both worlds: less paper, better memory - analog or digital -- with
the ability to search either.
