Wow, if that doesn't speak volumes about how well Apple products are selling these days...
>the hitherto automatic $0.99 charge to my credit card had been denied
>Apple never notified me that an automatic payment had been refused.

THIS is why I dislike automatic ANYTHING. This, and being repeat-charged for automatic payments, or the amount is changed and wrong, and somehow, never in my favor.
>Most’s well that ends better.

Glad things worked out for you.
Apple should be ashamed, but they've been like this for decades, even when Jobs was in charge. And to be fair, Google and Microsoft are even worse.  Amazon is only slightly better.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
The problem was removed.  Here’s how:  After convincing myself that the shut-down of my iPhone wasn’t due to hacking, I finally decided to consult Apple itself.  I tried to make an appointment at the Burlington Apple store and was forced online.  After rassling with Apple’s site for a while, I admitted defeat and bought my body to the store.
To my surprise and delight, it was almost devoid of customers, so the agent at the door could give me serious attention.  He had me check the iCloud status; it showed that the hitherto automatic $0.99 charge to my credit card had been denied (I’d been fooled by the fact that a $0.99 charge showed as having been paid). Apple never notified me that an automatic payment had been refused.
I updated the credit card number, and PRESTO my 50 gig iCloud memory allotment was restored (I’d used a measly ~15 gig).
Most’s well that ends better.

Thanks, again, folks.  I don’t have to toss & turn overnight.
