Hi Peter,
I actually did this with a DVR that I owned a long time ago, in my case,
to increase storage. I'm sure I violated terms and invalidated the
warranty, but it was my box. I'm pretty confident you are violating the
terms of your agreement with Xfinity by messing with the box and there
may be seals you will have to break that can indicate that you did it.
I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing nobody will care/notice if you
return it the way you received it in working order. You just may have
some explaining it you end up breaking it and have to get a new one.
Somewhat related, but I have Youtube TV as my "cable" provider and it
has unlimited cloud DVR storage so it neither keeps me awake, nor do I
have to worry about running out of storage.
