Alan graduated in 1968, a year after I did. So in 78 or so he would only
have been youngish. The history of his early years is quite interesting and
he gave a talk at our '67-'68 MIT lecture series about a year ago that
should still be available. Contact his classmate Paul Gluck for the link
which I don't seem to have.

i took professor kleppener's physics course in my freshman year at MIT - or
i should say the one taught from his textbook. it was 8.012. sadly, i
had to settle for a young at that time little-known "substitute" lecturer
however the year i took it ('82), prof. alan guth.
very pleasant memories, indeed.

remember distinctly, a demonstration of conservation of momentum. Kleppner
and the other professor entered the stage of 26-100 on roller skates, each
holding the end of a rope. They had a "tug-of-war" with each other. As
Kleppner was the lighter of the two, he was pulled across the center line
very quickly.
