This Week’s Topic

· *October 8, 2025* – Susan Liebman and *The Dressmaker's Mirror*

Susan was in my brother’s class at MIT, and about 6 months ago gave a talk
in a lecture series run for our two classes. It was so good that I
thought we should have it presented to you.

*Susan is a molecular geneticist who ironically dropped her first genetics
course. She graduated from MIT with a Bachelor’s degree in biology. She
earned a master’s degree from Harvard in biophysics (M.S. 1969) and PhD
from the University of Rochester in Genetics (Ph.D. 1974).*

*Susan then went on to have a distinguished academic career as a teacher
and researcher at the University of Illinois in Chicago. As a molecular
geneticist, Susan used yeast as a model organism to study neurodegenerative
disease such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig Disease), Frontal
Temporal Lobe Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. More recently, she extended
her research model to study cancer genes. She has over 115 publications in
leading journals, including Nature, Science, and Cell, and has obtained
more than $13 million in research funding. For her work Susan was honored
by University of Illinois as a Distinguished University Professor, now
emeritus.*

*Recently she transitioned her lab to the University of Nevada, Reno where
she is currently a Research Professor in molecular genetics. In addition
to her research, she taught genetics to undergraduate and graduate students
for more than 35 years.*

*Following the sudden death of her niece in 2008, Susan became a medical
detective and a champion promoting genetic testing. She offers continuing
medical education seminars and speaks about the importance of genetic
testing to lay audiences.*

*Susan’s new book published last November, “The Dressmaker’s Mirror: Sudden
Death, Genetics, and a Jewish Family’s Secret” inspires and guides readers
to appreciate and use the lifesaving tool of genetic testing to protect
themselves and their families*
