[Lex Computer & Tech Group/LCTG] Sound Transmission for a Live Performance?

At Brookhaven at Lexington, where I live, we have a resident group which presents plays from time to time. Their next production is in mid-April.
Their technical person has an issue which some in our group may be able to help address.
The problem is to get the sound of the players on-stage to headphones or similar off-stage, for the purpose of coordinating sound effects.
The stage is 30 ft by about 20 ft. It is in an auditorium setting. WiFi is pretty spotty at the stage end of the room.
Our budget is small, preferably $100 or less.
Sound fidelity is not important. Low latency is important, to have sound effects happen when they are needed.
Transmission should be wireless.
Actors have mics which feed into the auditorium sound system (speakers). There is the "Audible" system for audience members, but its signal does not reach backstage.
Bluetooth was suggested, but is this reliable, with the correct range, latency and resistance to interference which we would want? Is a smartphone an adequate pickup for on-stage? (If so, is there an app involved?)
While fairly technically competent, none of us is a sound engineer, and we do not have studio-grade production equipment.
Any ideas are welcome. If we get some good ideas going, I can get our technical person in on this discussion directly. If we try something and it works (or fails) I'll be back in touch.
Thanks everyone.
