John, the research is correct.
I have short-term memory issues (lifelong issues) and I find that writing something down does help me remember. I'm particularly bad with names and numbers. Something about the physical act of writing these things down activates parts of my memory which otherwise don't kick in very well.
Drew, I recognize there are many benefits to digital record-keeping.
I use email and documents to keep track of financial and medical information, using all-electronic means. And syncing across devices is very convenient. Sure beats entering the same data over and over. Without a computer or tablet, I can't balance a checkbook, let alone do tax and social security required record-keeping and reporting.

Research shows that handwriting notes activates multiple brain regions associated with optimal memory, much more so than digital devices. Taking notes by hand or writing a to-do list on paper will preserve that memory a lot longer than typing into a laptop or phone. (Psychology Today)
