This is a late response. Thanks to Ted for sending the link to this
conversation with Lindzen and Emmanuel.
Here are some reactions I had.
First, Kerry Emmanuel is not neutral on man-made climate change, but he is
fairly middle of the road. (I have heard other talks he has given, not just
this one.) He doesn't say the sky is falling. He says we might be able to
adapt, but that there is enough of a possibility that we won't be able to
adapt, that we can't be idle.
Lindzen is way at an extreme, saying there is not much changing, human
action has very little to do with any change, and let's just not worry about
the climate.
Lindzen spoke in detail about wind currents and what happens at different
latitudes. I'm sure he knows more about this than I do, but I think it is
largely irrelevant.
The basic physics is that carbon dioxide (and methane and nitrous oxide)
don't absorb much energy in the peak wavelengths of the incoming solar
radiation, but do absorb well in the wavelengths at which the earth
radiates. It is beyond question that the carbon dioxide level in our
atmosphere has risen greatly since direct measurements have been made, and
generally continues to rise. Measurements of ice cores indicate that the
current CO2 concentration has not been seen in at least a million years,
probably much longer than a million years. We also see that before the
industrial period began, CO2 did vary but not into nearly the range of the
last hundred years.
Therefore, the earth must heat up. How this heat is distributed around the
globe and between land and sea is complicated and subject to argument.
Lindzen ignores the big picture.

Ted,
The Wilson Science Forum did host Richard Lindzen as featured speaker on two
Fridays in 2022.
You can find the presentations, the first in April and the second, a
conversation between Lindzen and Emanuel, in November, linked in this

Nothing at all wrong with someone like Emanuel talking -- but he is clearly
biased away from a neutral position
You would need to balance him with a Bjon Lonborg or perhaps a Richard
Lindzen
The real problem is that most of these people are trying to compare models
to models -- few of them actually can define the relevant metrics in
measured data
I'd like some of the climate pontificators to apply their models to the
Tonga Experimental injection of massive amounts of H20 into the upper
atmosphere which we can track in real-time
Ted
PS: -- give me a simple definition of the temperature of the planet and how
to observe it over an extended period of time so that we can compare it to
external factors [e.g. solar input] as well as internal factors [e.g.
volcanism], etc.

Subject: A Thought...
John,
I host the Wilson Science and Technology Forum in Winchester. We exchanged
messages earlier this year on a presentation by Kerry Emanuel on climate
issues. I sense that we may have many interests in common with LCTG. To
that point, one of our members, Vincent Dixon, recently videotaped a
Christmas Forum Program for our group in which he narrated a conversation
about the technology and national security origins of some well-know
Christmas songs. He then sang these songs! While Vincent is a known
historian, and writer it appears now that he is in addition a singer! I
found the experience interesting for a technology-oriented group. It adds a
new dimension to our programming.
At any rate, the link to this program is as follows:

LCTG, please feel free to show it to your crew. Let me know.
Meanwhile, Happy Holidays!
