I contacted Microsoft Support. The tech was useless. He tried what I
tried and also uninstalling the audio drivers followed by a reboot.
Nothing worked. He then dropped off the line, with my laptop still
connected to the Microsoft Quick Assist program. I rebooted.
When the system rebooted. I couldn't use my bluetooth keyboard or mouse.
It took a while to figure out that the tech had set my bluetooth to
"off" before dropping me.
I let Norton update my drivers, so I suspected a driver issue.
Fortunately, Norton created a system restore point before the driver
update. I went back to the earliest Norton restore point and restored.
That seems to have solved the problem.
So much for Norton and driver updates. And for Microsoft tech support.
And a reminder to
Thought I would send this along in case this happens to someone else.

Subject Audio problems
Hi,
I've lost audio, both input and output, on my Windows 11 laptop,
possibly due to a driver update. When I plug in a USB headset, Windows
see the USB microphone but not the USB speaker. Here's what I've done to
try to solve the problem:
Rebooted
Run the Microsoft troubleshooter. It couldn't solve the problem
Used the Device Manager to update all audio drivers. In each case,
Device Manager reports, "The best drivers for your device are already
installed."
I'd appreciate any suggestions for getting my audio back.
Thank you,
Harriet
